"Breaking into TV Writing" Turner Publishing
In 2024, I sold and published Breaking Into TV Writing with Turner Publishing. The project was born out of years of experience working in and around writers’ rooms and seeing how little practical information was available to newcomers. Most screenwriting books focus on structure and storytelling craft, but I noticed how few explain how the business actually works. I wanted to write the book I wished I’d had when I started.
Through my own personal experience and interviews with five fellow TV writer colleagues, my goal was to take readers behind the curtain of the modern TV industry and help on a very practical level. This included how to get your first job and what kind of samples you really need, to the daily reality of how a writers’ room builds an episode from the ground up.
The book also takes a hard look at the myths that often circulate in Hollywood: the idea that if you simply “work hard and pay your dues,” opportunity will eventually find you. Instead, I explore the structural realities of the industry and share strategies for building genuine relationships, identifying the right entry points, and developing a long-term creative identity.
In order to sell the book, I developed an author platform where I gained 25,000 followers across TikTok, Instagram, Threads and a newsletter. This, along with a book proposal, enabled me to secure a literary agent, and then eventually a sale to Turner Publishing.
